Sphere of Concern versus Circle of Influence

As successful small companies, we pride ourselves on our ability to collaborate and support one another across functions. It's this spirit of teamwork that has driven our success and created long term resilience time and time again.

However, it's important to recognize that while our willingness to assist each other in areas outside our primary responsibilities, or what we call our Sphere of Concern, is commendable, it must not come at the expense of our core duties, our Circle of Influence.

Each team member is entrusted with specific responsibilities that directly contribute to the success of our team and organization as a whole. Neglecting these responsibilities can have far-reaching consequences, impacting not only individual performances but also the overall effectiveness of a team.

It's crucial to find the right balance between lending a helping hand in areas where we can add value and ensuring that we fulfill our primary obligations effectively. This requires a conscious effort to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.

By respecting the boundaries of our Circle of Influence, essentially each team member’s primary responsibilities, while still being supportive members of the team within our Sphere of Concern, everything inside the four walls of the business, we can achieve a balance that maximizes the collective impact.

Remember that primary responsibilities are not just tasks to be checked off but commitments to excellence and accountability. Honoring those commitments demonstrates dedication to the success of the whole team and the organization as a whole.

A team where each individual works at his or her best domain expertise and circle of influence is a vital part of accomplishing big things for all.
