What Makes You Tick
It is critical for leaders and entrepreneurs to understand what makes you tick and be able to say it out loud. Knowing what makes you tick is at the heart of building the correct team around you for success.
Ask yourself this question: What energizes you?
The answer doesn’t matter, but the key is to have the answer. I know that people energize me, but not negative complainers or people that talk too much. That may seem counterintuitive to my high D/I DISC profile, but it’s not - it’s that I don’t like people who waste time on idle chatter. I like engaging, interesting people who like to engage in debate. That’s not right or wrong, but I’m keenly aware of what makes me tick. This allows me to make a choice to surround myself always with people that keep me moving forward and feeling energized and inspired.
Most people know intuitively what makes them tick, which is why you get birds of a feather flock together. But you must understand and express it in a way to put people around you that definitively enhance your team. The strongest way to do that is using assessments like DISC. This isn’t about you changing anything about you when you hire your team, it’s about understanding how you work then understanding others around you. Fully understanding these two things give you the choice to modify your behavior. You have to be self-aware enough (an Emotional Intelligence assessment is a great start) to understand others. Understand who you are talking to and modify to be effective using DISC. If you know what makes you tick, you know who should be on your team!
